Great player; some minor gripes, November 14, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Yamaha BD-A1010BL Blu-Ray Disc Player (Electronics) I bought this Yamaha BD player for several reasons. Among them: I still have sizable SACD and DVD-Audio collections despite the "failure" of both those surround formats, and this unit plays them in addition to blu-ray discs. And after reading several reviews of different players, the Yamaha kept coming up strong, even against pricier units from the likes of NuForce and Oppo.
After spending a few days with the unit, I'm quite pleased overall. The sound is just outrageously good, whether playing an SACD, DVD-A or blu-ray audio. Picture quality and sound for movies? Both excellent. Ease of setup: Quite good.
However, there are a couple things one might keep in mind if considering purchase: First, this unit is NOT Wi-Fi ready, despite it being more expensive than some good players that are (several in the Sony lineup, for example). If you have a home network, the only choice is to wire it up with an Ethernet cable. Second, the unit is fairly slow to load. Especially... Read more

I bought this model because I wanted a universal disc player with above average audio quality when playing music-only material like CDs or high-resolution sources, like SACDs. I've listened to a wide variety of DVD and blu-ray players and generally found their analog outputs to be lacking, typically emphasizing the worst aspects of digital audio, imparting a certain graininess and high-end sheen reminiscent of many poorly mastered CDs from the late 80s. I prefer not to have separate CD, DVD and blu-ray players in my home theater system. I'd rather just have one player that does it all well.
The other player I was considering was the Oppo BDP-93 which is also universal and has the reputation of excellent analog audio output. I chose the Yamaha because I recently purchased a new receiver in the Yamaha Aventage line, the RX-A1000, and have been very pleased with the sound of... Read more

won't play one DVD without skipping!!, February 12, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Yamaha BD-A1010BL Blu-Ray Disc Player (Electronics) I bought this blu-ray player because it matched my Yamaha RX-A2000 receiver. As far as looks go, it looks great and matches the receiver great. The only problem I have is it won't play a blu-ray disc the whole way through. It always goes to the home screen sometime in the play mode. I have contacted Amazon and they say it is past the return policy deadline. I have contacted Yamaha , and they haven't gotten back to me yet! I can't recommend this player because of it's problems. I've learned because it costs more doesn't make any better!!
