Sadly a re-badged sharp bd-hp25u with onkyo badge, July 31, 2011 By This review is from: Onkyo BD-SP309 Blu-Ray Disc Player - Black (Electronics) Upon seeing marketing illustrations of the rather spartan new blu ray player from onkyo, i was hopeful it would be based upon an LG design like the BD SP308. Upon initial powering on, i was taken aback by two things - very slow power-on times and quirkiness that was eerily similar to the maligned sharp-based pioneer bdps (330 and 430). For example, i twice lost video signals when connected to my panasonic plasma.
If you compare the rear panel to the entry level sharp bd- hp25u, you quickly realize fell into the same trap pioneer did some two and a half years ago in going cheap with a poor sharp design that is slow, buggy, and offers mediocre dvd playback with no picture adjustments.
Spending the same money with panasonic or sony is definitely the way to go.

Onky BD-SP309, July 17, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Onkyo BD-SP309 Blu-Ray Disc Player - Black (Electronics) This player does a great job upscaling dvd's and playing Blue Ray discs. However, I have connected it via ethernet cable to our modem and double checked the connectivity by connecting our laptop to the same. The ethernet port is working great. The problem is with the Onkyo player and Netflix. Netflix progress bar fills completely but the video will not play. Furthermore, Onkyo USA service department has been terrible! They are not the slightest bit concerned with my issue and have shown cursory interest in resolving it. I have called them 4 times to get the issue sorted but have yet to find resolution. Additionally, I have waited for "call-backs" that have never come. I am very disappointed with this player. I am a repeat Onkyo customer and have had one of their home theater systems and have recently upgraded to the tx-nr609 which seems to work fine. It's a good thing because I don't think I would find any resolution if there was an issue with it. I am very disappointed... Read more

Worth the purchase price for a no-frills spartan unit., July 25, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Onkyo BD-SP309 Blu-Ray Disc Player - Black (Electronics) The BD-SP309 does precisely what I purchased it to do: play Blu-Rays and DVD's well. So far, I've owned it a couple of months and have really had time to throw quite a few titles at it for standard viewing or for high-definition viewing. My home theater setup involves the 309 run through my Onkyo HT-RC260 and out to my Epson 8350 projector (displayed onto a 120" screen). With this size of screen there are definitely problems if the source can't do it's job correctly (especially if I leave any of the video processing on my A/V receiver set to "off"). With this player, though? No problems to speak of. Load times weren't exactly the fastest, but are nowhere near my dinosaur Samsung BDP-1590 and may improve with future firmware releases. The menu setup and file-playing works well, though I've only tested it once using a thumb drive to verify functionality of playing outside video files. Upscaling is remarkable on this one, which is saying something considering that I still have... Read more
